VHG DISCUSSION: PURPOSE – PART 1

GOD’S PART IN PURPOSE

Summary:
The subject of purpose is vital to the salvation experience in that we have been saved to fulfill the purpose that God has for our lives. When we speak of purpose, we’re referring to the eternal plan and course God has ordained for each person in this world. Original and hereditary sin has skewed this plan, throwing humanity off course, whether through ignorance of purpose, or abuse of purpose, or neglect of purpose, “all we like sheep have gone astray,” [Isa. 53:6]. In looking at God’s part in purpose, we will unearth the glorious truth that the One who made us is also the One who redeems us, setting us back in right relationship with Him and on course with His purpose for our lives. This grace act is a gift bestowed upon all who believe and trust in the finished work of our Saviour Jesus Christ, leaving us with no option but to express our thanks to “God for His unspeakable gift,” [2 Cor. 9:15]. Let’s discuss the wonder of God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Discussion Questions:

  • According to Scripture, because of hereditary sin, everyone has missed God’s mark or standard [Rom. 3:23], everyone enters the world separated from God, and everyone is prone to a life of spiritual wandering [Isa. 53:6], until they come to the knowledge and acceptance of Jesus Christ. Discuss with others what a life in sin feels like, what brought you to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and how has the experience of salvation brought you to a deeper understanding of your life’s purpose?
  • According to Scripture, Jesus was our penal substitute, meaning that He stood in our place [2 Cor. 5:21], paid the penalty for sin that we should have paid by dying the deaths we should have died [Matt. 27:46,50], leaving us with the benefits of His death, burial, and resurrection [2 Cor. 5:19]. In short, Jesus paid it all. Discuss how knowing what Jesus has done for you deepens your relationship with Him through faith, trust, and intimacy. What suggestions can you offer to others seeking to draw closer to Jesus?
